Purple Heart Reunited with Owner After 70 Years

Purple Heart award makes its way back home with the help of a few patriotic citizens. Army Cpl. George Hemphill returned to North Carolina after fighting in World War II many years ago and vowed to put the horrors of life as an infantryman behind him. That included not inquiring about the Purple Heart he received and mailed home for safekeeping. Image his surprise when he found out a Florida man actually bought the medal back in 2000 at an antique shop in South Carolina. Since then the heart made its way to Vermont with a man that plans on giving Hemphill the honor he deserves with a special ceremony. Now 90-years-old, Hemphill said he was flabbergasted at the news and never believed he would ever see the medal again. He is grateful for the work people are doing for him, even though it is out of their way. The veteran and his purple heart will finally be reunited at a community center as Capt. Zachariah Fike, head of the nonprofit Purple Hearts Reunited, presents the award along with a Bronze Star Hemphill never knew the military granted him. Fike started his nonprofit group back in 2009 and has since … Keep Reading...

WWII Merchant Marine Veteran Receives US Flag in Recognition of Service

Special U.S. flag gift honors WWII Merchant Marine veteran from New York for his service. In Utica, New York, a World War II veteran proudly received an incredible item in recognition for his service to this country. To this day, he is still very proud of his years of service and now for the U.S. flag that flew over the state capital that now belongs to him. On Tuesday September, 25th Harrison (Harry) Charles Preston of New York Mills was honored in a special ceremony. Along with the flag, he also received a certificate authenticating the flag. Preston, 84, who served five years as a Merchant Marine said, “I never had anything like this happen to me before. This (the flag) will be at the New Hartford Legion on display and I plan to leave it with them so it will always be there.” As a Merchant Marine, Preston provided support services such as transporting fuel and supplies during WWII. Up until the late 1980’s Merchant Marines were not even recognized as veterans. US Rep. Richard Hanna, who presented the flag to Harry, commented on this with, “In the Merchant Marines, one out of every 26 people were killed. They … Keep Reading...

48-Star Flag Resurfaces on Election Day

Rewind back a month to June 5 and you have Election Day in Ventura County. After voting, Camarillo resident Keith Salvas discovered a special treasure – a brand new 48-star American flag. Salvas, a clerk for the Los Angeles Unified School District, described his finding as “almost like finding a lost Picasso.” With this incredible discovery, he vowed to preserve this flag as historically significant; Salvas did so by dedicating himself to a campaign surrounding it. By contacting the Ventura County Elections Division, he informed them of his find, hoping the flag would be framed and put on display for the public to view. Because of the pristine condition, Salvas does not believe this flag is ready to be retired. However, not all in the county feel as sentimental as Salvas does towards this flag. Mark Lunn, a Ventura County Clerk-Record reported, “48-star flags are fairly prevalent and I don’t see the significance of doing something other than what we would normally do.” In a follow up interview, Lunn did say he would look into the historical significance before he made a final decision. Depending on the uniqueness of the flag, the patriotic item could be placed in their vault … Keep Reading...

Lost U.S. Flag & WWII Medal Returned to Rightful Owner

Priceless U.S. Flag and World War II Medal returned after being lost in 2011 Tornado. After a tornado passed through Holt on April 27th, 2011, Margaret Krallman prayed for a miracle to help find her mother-in-laws lost possessions.  Her mother-in-law, Thelma Bennett Krallman, died in the storm at the age of 89 when her house was blown off its foundation and scattered across a block-wide area.  The only remains from where the house once stood are the front steps.  Two items that were lost during the storm were a Purple Heart medal awarded to Staff Sgt. George H. Krallman for his service in World War II and the folded American flag awarded to his family after his death.  These items meant more than anything else to the family and the sifted through the debris for weeks after the storm in search of these items.  They even used a metal detector to try and find the military medal.  After a few weeks pasted without any luck they began to lose hope.  “Everyone had given up, but I said as long as there was dirt, I wouldn’t stop,” Margaret said. “My husband said he couldn’t dig anymore, but I felt like I … Keep Reading...

The American Flag’s Most Timeless Photograph

‘Flags of Our Fathers’ Author Describes Learning of His Dad’s Quiet Courage Flags of Our Fathers (2000) is a New York Times bestselling book.  The book, written by James Bradley with Ron Powers, follows the lives of the five Marines and one United States Navy Corpsman who raised the American Flag at Iwo Jima.  This moment happened after one of the costliest and most horrifying battles of World War II’s Pacific Theater.  It was captured in one of the most iconic pictures in American history, representing our united will for victory and our brotherhood in arms. The Navy Corpsman, who would eventually be made famous by Joe Rosenthal’s lauded photograph of the American flag rising at Iwo Jima, is John Bradley the author’s father.  The book was published in May of 2000 and spent 46 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction best seller list, spending six weeks at number one.  Initially James Bradley’s book was rejected by publishers, but went on to be a great commercial success and was turned into a movie by director Clint Eastwood. James Bradley spoke at the Wauwatosa Public Library Foundation Leadership Luncheon last Thursday.  The event recognized the achievements of Wauwatosa students as … Keep Reading...
