Elks Chapter Celebrates the 236th Birthday of Old Glory

A local Order of the Elks chapter recently held a ceremony honoring the 236th birthday of Old Glory just in time for Flag Day. Last Sunday, over 120 community members attended a special pre-flag day ceremony at the Order of the Elks No. 2399 building. The ceremony honored the 236th birthday of the American flag. Although Flag Day is officially June 14th, the Elks chapter held the event on the first day of National Flag Week. To kick off the patriotic event, a group sang The Star-Spangled Banner as a Color Guard from the local Marine Corps League posted the colors. After that, a pair of Elks officers that included Ace Johnson told the crowd the story of Old Glory over the years. The historic story began with how the first American flag was commissioned in May or June of 1776, based on a rendering done by Betsy Ross. More historic story telling was done by a young Marine Jacob Glover. When he took the podium, he told the story “I am the Flag.” According this his speech, the first official US Flag came to be on June 14th, 1777. The Marine then proceeded to describe what the colors represented, … Keep Reading...

Rare 1890 American Flag on Display

After finding a unique 1890 American flag, it will be on display for the public in honor of Memorial Day. A rare American flag was recently uncovered, that dates all the way back to the 1890’s. Even though it’s slightly faded and has a few tears, the enormous flag is still a sight to see. The flag measures 12 feet by 26 feet and has 44 stars. Historians can place the flag between July 1891, right after Wyoming entered the Union as the 44th state, and January 1896 when Utah became a state. Barbara Delmolino, a member of the Sheffield Friendly Union Library Association believes the flag is a very unusual find, due to its size and good condition considering its age. She also thinks the flag is made from a cotton and linen combination. The rare flag was actually found a year ago in an old desk drawer, when the Library Association was doing some renovations. For only the second time since its appearance, the flag will be on display in honor of Memorial Day. Viewing will be open to the whole public starting Monday May 27th at 9 am. Nobody is quite sure where the American flag exactly … Keep Reading...

Stars From Old American Flags Find a New Use

One New York group takes stars from old American flags and uses them to honor veterans and military members for their service. In Troy, New York, one patriotic group found a new way to use worn out US flags to honor military service members and veterans. They started a campaign called Stars For Our Troops where they cut out stars from old American flags and use them as a way to recognize service to our country. Susan Wells started the program. After she collects tattered and torn US flags, she first washes and presses each flag. After she carefully cuts our each of the 50 stars (assuming they are all in tact), she places them in a small tote bag with a note. That special note reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.” Even though Wells founded the program, she has about a dozen volunteers that help her distribute the stars on holidays and during patriotic events such as a recent Memorial … Keep Reading...

Over 100 new US flags Fly in Oregon

Flag program flies over 100 new US flags in honor of US veterans. In Prineville, Oregon, a small patriotic gesture has grown much larger than any resident ever expected. On Memorial Day, the residents came together and displayed over 100 brand new US flags as part of a new patriotic initiative that continues to grow. According to the Crook County Commissioner Seth Crawford, he and a few other key residents have been working on the flag project for a year now. They began setting up the flag at 5 am and when they were done, exactly 118 American flags proudly waved in the breeze. Crawford said, “We just thought it would be a great way to honor our veterans – anybody you want to honor.” These are not just your run of the mill US flag either. Each flag is embroidered with the name of a veteran being honored. The program plans on setting up the flags not only on Memorial Day, but also Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriot Day, and Veterans Day. The entire flag program would not have been possible without the help of local donations or money, equipment, and time. … Keep Reading...

Veteran Offers His Flag Etiquette Help

Just in time for the upcoming summer patriotic holidays, a US veteran offers his tips on American flag etiquette. Flying a flag with proper etiquette is important every day of the year, especially on patriotic holidays like Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Independence Day.  Roger Layton, first vice commander of the American Legion Post 22, holds the flag particularly close to his heart and wants to make sure everyone knows how to fly it right. Keeping all the rules straight can get a little complex, but they’re designed to make sure Old Glory is shown the honor and respect she deserves. For example, a light should always be shown on the flag when it’s displayed outdoors overnight. Flags must always be in good condition too. They are allowed to be repaired for minor fixes, but large tears and wholes require flag retirement (link to past blog). Layton said, “Flags should be in serviceable condition. There’s a point at which it gets ratty and people still display them when they should not. You can give unserviceable flags to any veterans’ organization like the American Legion or VFW, and they will properly destroy it.” If you would like to … Keep Reading...

The History of Armed Forces Day

Every third Saturday in May, the United States celebrates Armed Forces Day. Learn more about where the tradition comes from and why we celebrate the day. Armed Forces Day is a lesser known holiday around the United States but still a very important day that deserves honor. But, where does the holiday stem from and why do we celebrate it? This year, the holiday falls on May 18th, 2013. Armed Forces Day dates back to 1949 when the secretary of defense Louis Johnson announced its creation. The first official holiday landed on May 20th, 1950. The holiday was meant to replace all the separate military holidays such as Army, Navy, and Air Force Days. The holiday began when all the military branches unified under one department – the Department of Defense. President Harry Truman made an official speech announcing the holiday where he “praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas.” He also established a theme for the first holiday as “Teamed for Defense.” Along with honoring the military and the work they do for our country, Armed Forces Day holds another purpose. The holiday is also meant to be an educational tool for US … Keep Reading...

American Legion Retires U.S. Flags

American Legion retires U.S. flags as they pay their utmost respect to Old Glory. Last week, 12 members of the American Legion Post 20 stood at attention during a very special flag retirement ceremony. Friends and family members also gathered to pay their respects. Legion Commander Bob Masters said, “You would be surprised how many people do not know how to dispose of flags properly and just throw them away.” Masters lead the flag retirement ceremony that honorably disposed of torn, tattered, and faded American flags. During the ceremony, several post commanders gave short speeches on what the American flag really meant to them. After they said their peace, they handed the flag to Masters who then placed to flags in the fire. Burning the flags and then burying the ashes is the proper way to dispose of unserviceable flags. One Legion member believes the true power of the ceremony comes from the fact that several men have died for the flag. Because of this, the American flag deserves the utmost respect. In total, the Legion honored 12 flags. However, they have more than 30 waiting back at their post. The commander said they simply did not want to do … Keep Reading...

American Legion Offers Dignified Flag Ceremony

The Waxhaw American Legion Post 208 offers a dignified flag ceremony for old U.S. flags. Most Americans know that the U.S. flag should be treated with honor and respect. However, if they haven’t served in the military or scouts, they may not know what to do exactly with a flag when it becomes old, torn, tattered, or faded. According to the U.S. flag code, once an American flag is in a condition that renders it unfit to fly as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified way; the key words being “dignified way.” The Waxhaw post decided they would help their community with a little spring cleaning and properly retire any old flags people might have had. The post recently had two mailboxes painted that they used as drop boxes to collect the U.S. flags. Post commander James Grainger said they got so many flags they had to be periodically removed from the mailboxes and stored inside until the ceremony. This will not be the first, or last, dignified flag ceremony they American Legion hosts. The last one they held turned into quite the extravagant spectacle! The color guard and Boy Scouts … Keep Reading...

Holly Hill to Fine Veterans Group for Displaying American and Military flags

A non-profit veterans group is now being fined for flying their American and military flags outside their headquarters building. In Valusia County, Florida, the city of Holly Hill issued a warning to the local veterans group for displaying military flags in front of their headquarters late last week. The flags are in violation of a new city ordinance that requires a $25 permit per flag and a $1 fee per flag every day it’s displayed. Ever after the warning from the city, leader of the group Eddie Colosimo said the flags will not come down. He also said, “There are men and women out there, fighting for them all over this world, and I want people to remember that and recognize it.” Colosimo is very passionate about helping veterans and always pays his respects with the seven flags he flies outside his veterans’ non-profit organization. Colosimo is determined to keep flying his flags. He believes it’s not fair for anyone to tell him he cannot fly the American flag, POWMIA flag, or any military flag and has no plans to take any of them down. Colosimo has support from his community, including that of chairman Jason Davis, who is also … Keep Reading...

American Flag Honors a Local Marine

Over 45 years later, a special U.S. flag honors a local Marine. In Wappingers Falls when Dennis Whiteley was only ten years old, his brother Wayne was killed by a sniper in Vietnam. Now more than 45 years later, Marine Lance Cpl. Wayne Whiteley was honored for his dedication and sacrifice to his country with an American flag. In a special ceremony, Dennis and his parents received a commemorative American flag that had flown over the U.S. capitol. The flag is now set to fly outside the nursing home where Bill and Tess Whiteley reside. During the ceremony, veterans from World War II through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars joined to watch and honor the long lost local hero. Wayne, age 89, even helped raise the flag in memorial of his son. The dedication of the flag and ceremony were also meant to highlight the growing concern for the large number of veterans who now need special medical assistance. Programs that now run through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will be safe from upcoming Federal cuts, but still require attention. According to the VA, at the end of September 2012, there were over 480,000 veterans just in New York who … Keep Reading...
