Kalamazoo U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony

Rotary Club shows how to properly retire an American flag. The Rotary Club of Kalamazoo, Michigan is sponsoring its annual U.S. flag retirement ceremony at a local Veterans Memorial. The group has already started to collect flags from around the county to honor in their hour-long ceremony. With the help of Boy Scout Troops and area veterans’ groups, the flags will be burned according to the U.S. Flag Code, which sets strict guidelines for both the proper use and disposal of American flags. According to Kay Maxson, coordinator of the special affair, the flags will arrive at the park via the VFW Red Arrow Post. The VFW itself has already collected hundreds of flags that need to be properly retired and their drop box is inviting anymore previously-loved flags. The ceremony will let these U.S. flags be retired in a dignified manner and also show the community the necessarily steps. Bubba Watson Honored to Carry U.S. Flag in Ryder Cup

American golfer, Bubba Watson, carried the flag to represent the military in 2012 Ryder Cup. Masters golf champion, Bubba Watson, represented military service members “that keep fighting for our freedom” when he took the course carrying the U.S. flag in the Ryder Cup. He further described his sentiment towards the flag by saying, “the military that wears our flag everywhere they go. They give us freedom to play golf, to play the Ryder Cup.” Watson has never been in the military but showed excitement for his chance to represent the country, “That’s the passion: it’s the people that I’ve never met that keep fighting for our freedom, any time you can represent them and hopefully hit some good shots for them.” Watson has particular cause to reach out and support the military. His father Gerry, who first introduced him to the game of golf at the age of six, was a Green Beret in the U.S. Special Forces. WWII Merchant Marine Veteran Receives US Flag in Recognition of Service

Special U.S. flag gift honors WWII Merchant Marine veteran from New York for his service. In Utica, New York, a World War II veteran proudly received an incredible item in recognition for his service to this country. To this day, he is still very proud of his years of service and now for the U.S. flag that flew over the state capital that now belongs to him. On Tuesday September, 25th Harrison (Harry) Charles Preston of New York Mills was honored in a special ceremony. Along with the flag, he also received a certificate authenticating the flag. Preston, 84, who served five years as a Merchant Marine said, “I never had anything like this happen to me before. This (the flag) will be at the New Hartford Legion on display and I plan to leave it with them so it will always be there.” As a Merchant Marine, Preston provided support services such as transporting fuel and supplies during WWII. Up until the late 1980’s Merchant Marines were not even recognized as veterans. US Rep. President Obama Orders All US Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Colorado Shooting Victims. Lost U.S. Flag & WWII Medal Returned to Rightful Owner

Priceless U.S. Flag and World War II Medal returned after being lost in 2011 Tornado. After a tornado passed through Holt on April 27th, 2011, Margaret Krallman prayed for a miracle to help find her mother-in-laws lost possessions.  Her mother-in-law, Thelma Bennett Krallman, died in the storm at the age of 89 when her house was blown off its foundation and scattered across a block-wide area.  The only remains from where the house once stood are the front steps.  Two items that were lost during the storm were a Purple Heart medal awarded to Staff Sgt. George H. 19 Year-Old, Sloane Stephens, Keeps the US Flag Flying at the French Open    - Paris The 19-year-old, from Coral Springs, Florida delivered her career-best slam performance Friday to guarantee that Old Glory will be overhead at Roland Garros for at least a few more days. Sloane Stephens, along with Christina McHale and Varvara Lapchenko, was one of only three Americans to reach the third round of the French Open in Paris with the notable exits of the high-profile Williams Sisters. Out of the eight teenagers in this year’s open she was the only one to reach the third round.  Stephens carries American interest in the women’s draw into the fourth round after powering past her opponent, Mathilde Johansson, the hometown favorite. Ranked 79th in the world and making only her fourth slam appearance, Stephens, hit 26 winners in the third-round on Friday to eliminate the 27-year-old, Johansson, from France.  Stephens beat Johansson in just over an hour and a half 6-3 and 6-2. Veterans Upset About Tattered American Flags Flying Over Memorial Weekend

Retired Soldiers Dismayed By Frayed US Flags Flying On Memorial Day Reports of disgruntled Veterans in Phoenix and Rhode Island surfaced over Memorial weekend due to American flags that were flown in an unacceptable condition.  Retired Colonel U.S. Army Veteran, Lonnie Barham, decided to take action when at the Public Park in Providence, RI. He saw an American flag in appalling condition. Barham served in Iraq and his son is currently serving in Afghanistan has a lot of pride in the American flag and seeing it in such poor condition is heart breaking.  “It is in absolute tatters,” he told reporters. “I have never seen a flag flown, period, private or public in such deplorable condition. It’s a travesty.” Barham called the city’s Parks and Recreation Department last week and was told the flag would be fixed.  However, on Memorial Day the tattered flag remained on top the flag pole. “Someone in the city is falling down on their responsibility even after being notified they still didn’t take the right course of action, so it’s bothersome,” said Barham.  With no luck, Lonnie Barham turned to NBC 10 News.  After watching their story Providence’s Mayor, Angel Taveras, responded in a tweet … Keep Reading...

Memorial Day Half-staff Etiquette for Properly Honoring Our Nation’s Heroes. This year Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, 2013. While Memorial Day has largely become the “kickoff” to summer with outdoor celebrations and barbecues please take a moment to remember the men and women who died serving in the United States Armed Forces, the reason we celebrate Memorial Day each year. Also, as you prepare for the day’s festivities, keep in mind the proper protocol for flying a flag this (and all subsequent) Memorial Days to properly honor our nation’s heroes. According to United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1, Section 7, “the flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, and then raised to the top of the staff.” An easy way to remember when to fly a flag at half-staff is think of when the entire nation is mourning or remembrance.
