Happy Birthday Thomas Jefferson! April 13th Thomas Jefferson was an author, historian, and philosopher. He wrote the Declaration of Independence, was the third president of the United States, founded the University of Virginia, and served his country for over five decades. In 1776, as a member of the Continental Congress, he was chosen to draft the Declaration of Independence, which has been highly regarded as a charter of liberties ever since then. The document asserts that all men are created equal in rights. Amongst his notable achievements were his purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803 and his support of the Lewis and Clark expedition while in office. Thomas Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages and was deeply intrigued with science, religion, and philosophy, which led him to assist in fathering the University of Virginia. The university currently has 21,000 students on campus; and since the U.S. News & World Report Rankings began a separate list of the top 50 public universities, University of Virginia has never been ranked lower than number two.
