US Flag-Covered Spire Added to NYC World Trade Center Roof

In New York City, a US flag-covered spire was hoisted high to the new World Trade Center roof to help complete a symbolic building. Flapping in the cool breeze, a US flag that adorned the last piece of silver spire was raised to the very top of the World Trade Center on Thursday, May 2. The construction workers cheered as the stars and stripes were slowly hoisted up. The last two segments of the 408-foot spire will remain on the construction platform and draped with the American flag for a few weeks until the whole needle is ready to be permanently installed. When all is said and done, the trade center will symbolically soar 1,776 feet high, which is meant to reference the birth of the nation in 1776. The spire consists of 18 separate parts and weighs 758 tons. A barge brought it to Manhattan many months ago. Steven Plate, the man overseeing construction of the building said, “It will give a tremendous indication to people around the entire region, and the world, that we’re back and better than ever.” The US flag-covered spire isn’t only for show. With a beacon at its very peak, the tall needle with … Keep Reading...

Mystery Patriot Plants American Flags

Late one night, a mystery patriot planted U.S. flags all around the neighborhoods of Sandwich, Illinois. In Sandwich, Illinois, Dan Kelleher woke up last Thursday like any other day. Except when he stepped outside to grab the paper, he noticed a small American flag planted right next to his mailbox. And when he took a drive around the whole block, he saw every house had a stick flag placed neatly next to their mailbox. Kelleher told the news crew Friday, “Then I drove around the whole block and I said, ‘Wow, they’re at all the houses.’ We want to thank whoever did this, because it was a thoughtful, beautiful gesture.” Unfortunately, the mystery patriot who planted the 57 flags in front of houses is yet to be identified. Residents of the community figure the secret flag-planter must have acted during the night since nobody saw anything. Another resident, Terry Adams, expressed her gratitude with, “It put a smile on my face. We do have a great neighborhood.” The flags appeared just 10 days after two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon. The Sandwich area is home to many firefighters and police officers, who were all deeply touched by the act … Keep Reading...

Ex-Marathon Runner’s Flag Carries Incredible Meaning

After 68 marathons, one runner’s flag carries incredible emotion and meaning. From Boston to Los Angeles, Tom Falvey has run in 68 marathons throughout his life. Now 76-years-old, his last 26.2 mile run that took him 5 hours and 40 minutes put massive stress on his body, causing him to throw in the towel. However, the small American flag he liked to hold at the start of many races will always remind him of love for the sport. The life-long sportsman, and ex-boxer, enjoyed waving this flag at the starting gate and at the end cheering on the final runners; a tiny act that speaks volumes. Falvey said, “I respect those runners who are out there for six, heck, sometimes close to seven hours and sort of stagger in all alone… Heck in my last couple years I was them.” Falvey spoke about the Boston Marathon tragedy and gave his deepest regards. The city of Toledo is doing their part to honor the victims with over 7,000 community members who volunteered to run. Falvey will be there waving his stars and stripes in a big and emotional way. Falvey enlisted in the Army during college, where he fell in love … Keep Reading...

U.S. Flag Flies Extra High in Flint

The Mott Building operations supervisor explains his flag duties, ensuring the U.S. flag flies extra high in Flint, Michigan. When the Federal government declares flags to fly at half-staff after a terrible tragedy, the highest flying flag in Flint, Michigan is no exception. And when it is raised to full staff once again, it soars over 200 feet above the Mott Foundation Building on Saginaw Street. Billy Powell, the building operations supervisor, makes sure the stars and stripes are always flying in their proper position. On Monday April 22nd, Powell returned to the 16th floor to raise the U.S. flag back to full-staff. Powell has now worked at the building for about 25 years and is well versed in proper flag etiquette. He says, “Whenever the flag is at half-staff, it should be lowered all the way down, then it should be brought back all the way to the top.” Powell can attribute his extensive flag knowledge to his time in the Marines and previous position as a Boy Scout Leader. He has also volunteered for the Girl Scouts. Powell holds the American flag in very high respect. The one on Mott Building measures 10 feet by 20 feet and … Keep Reading...

County College Receives U.S. Flag Flown Overseas

Students at Gloucester County College received a U.S. flag flown overseas and returned the kindness by sending them a gift of their own. In Deptford, New Jersey, an American flag that once flew over a U.S military base in Afghanistan was given to the students at Gloucester County College Adult Transition Center. The flag was delivered to the students in return for their kindness a few weeks ago when they sent holiday cards to the troops. Last Friday, U.S. Sgt. Victor Halk visited the class to tell them about his military story. Halk was deployed twice so far, once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. He told all the students are parents about typical job duties, medals, and how much care packages are appreciated. Halk also helped them properly fold the U.S. flag they received. To show their appreciation for Halk’s speech and the flag, the students then sent a paper quilt to the 508th Military Police Company, 1st Platoon, as a thank you. The students involved are all a part of the ACT program, which gives those with disabilities ages 18-24 a post-secondary skill set to help them transition into adult society. I just wanted to do something special for the school.”   As Howe walked in, he was greeted with a unified, “Welcome Home!” from all the students. He quickly returned the greeting. Howe also explained how he really wanted to thank the students and flying an American flag over his camp was the best way he knew how. Now that flag finally has a home in a glass case. American Flag Honors a Local Marine

Over 45 years later, a special U.S. flag honors a local Marine. In Wappingers Falls when Dennis Whiteley was only ten years old, his brother Wayne was killed by a sniper in Vietnam. Now more than 45 years later, Marine Lance Cpl. Wayne Whiteley was honored for his dedication and sacrifice to his country with an American flag. In a special ceremony, Dennis and his parents received a commemorative American flag that had flown over the U.S. capitol. The flag is now set to fly outside the nursing home where Bill and Tess Whiteley reside. During the ceremony, veterans from World War II through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars joined to watch and honor the long lost local hero. Wayne, age 89, even helped raise the flag in memorial of his son. The dedication of the flag and ceremony were also meant to highlight the growing concern for the large number of veterans who now need special medical assistance. Programs that now run through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will be safe from upcoming Federal cuts, but still require attention. According to the VA, at the end of September 2012, there were over 480,000 veterans just in New York who … Keep Reading...

Last week in York County, Nebraska, fifth graders from all over the area learned about an American symbol and how to properly honor the stars and stripes. The students watched a special hour-long presentation put on by a few very special guests. The York High School Principal Mitch Bartholomew and York Lions Club representative Ardean Kohtz both kicked off the presentation and spoke about proper flag etiquette. Next, Boy Scout Troop 174 demonstrated some of the proper flag rules by presenting the colors in front of the whole crowd.
