City Council Supports Flag Etiquette Program

University students start their own flag etiquette program called Restore the Glory to repair and replace worn out American flags. A pair of patriotic university students approached the Tiffin city council with a request for old and tattered American flag. They would like to start their own flag etiquette program to replace and repair damaged U.S. flags. Tyler Todd and Micheal Porter, two student Veteran Organization members, plan on calling their program the Restore the Glory project. The program would give American flags proper retirements, provide flag owners a change to replace old flags and educate the public on proper flag etiquette code. “It makes me feel good, especially to see young people out here driving this,” Councilman Jim Roberts said.Councilwoman Lori Ritzler thanked the group for spreading the knowledge of flags in schools. As of February 18th, the Restore the Glory project evaluated 2/3 of the flying American flags in their city and found 29 that needed serious attention and love. Thus far, the group hopes to raise $300 to replace those flags. Council President Paul Elchert thanked the boys for their presentation and agreed the tattered stars and stripes did not properly represent what the flag means or … Keep Reading...

U.S. Honor Flag Flies in Memory of Slain Texas Prosecutor

The U.S. honor flag was a special way to pay tribute to the assistant district attorney. Mark Hasse started his day off like any other, except that on Thursday January 31st he was shot to death on his way to work. As a way to honor the lawyer, a special flag was flown in and escorted from DFW Airport by a motorcade of Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers and Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies. This particular U.S. honor flag flew over the Texas state capital on September 11th, 2001 and since then has travelled almost 6 million miles to honor fallen U.S. heroes. In the town square many people gathered to see the honor flag raised to half-staff by a Dallas honor guard. The American flag flew at half-staff from Monday February 4th to Tuesday 5th at 4pm. Upon taking the flag down, a military aircraft flew over another ceremony in Hasse’s honor. Fellow attorney Mike McLelland said Hasse would have been very impressed by the patriotic ceremony in his honor. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Hasse was training to be a Navy pilot. However, a problem with his wrist sent him home, but certainly did not stop him from … Keep Reading...

Louisiana Man Receives Flag Violation for Displaying his American Flag

Resident says the flag violation is punishment for being patriotic. Patrick Hogan, Covington, Louisiana resident follows the same tradition every national holiday: he proudly flies his American flag. This is a routine he has conducted ever since he left the Navy over four decades ago. However, this past Pearl Harbor Day he did not receive his usual warm sentiments for his patriotism. A few days after the holiday, he found a formal flag violation letter in the mail. The letter states that the American flag was not approved by the CAA and must be removed. Specifically, hanging the flag over the garage was against the associations rules. The Tallow Creek Neighborhood Association’s new management company sent the flag violation notice to Hogan with a warning that he must stop the action, or else. Hogan believes such a forceful request is un-American. “They can show all their Christmas decorations and leave their basketball goals at the curb, but I can’t fly my flag,” Hogan asked in disgust. The Louisiana man moved to this neighborhood after 2005 Hurricane Katrina forced him to move. This is the first incident between Hogan and the neighborhood association. No other fellow patriots in Hogan’s neighborhood have … Keep Reading...

One giant American flag supported by two Topeka Fire Department aerial trucks displayed the stars and stripes prominently above S.W. Topeka Boulevard. Both men were laid to rest at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. One retired law enforcement officer Baldwin said he feels the department’s pain in losing two men so dedicated to the job. “They stand the front lines just like everybody else,” Baldwin also commented in reference to military members protecting the country’s freedom and law enforcement officials protecting individual rights. Several citizens even drove many miles to show their support. Phil Boatright traveled a half an hour to hold his flag as he stood in awe watching the funeral procession and large crowd. Thieves Intervening Does Not Stop Veterans from Flag Retiring Tradition

Veterans lay old flags to rest during their flag retiring tradition despite stolen handmade fire basket Every first Sunday in December American Legion Post 534 from Cincinnati retires torn and tattered American flags by the preferred congressional method of burning. All veterans take this patriotic traditional ceremony very seriously and consider it a great honor. Members give a 21-gun salute, while an honor guard stands at attention. The overused stars and stripes are then burned in a rectangular wrought-iron fire basket made special by a Legion member. This year was no exception for the flag retiring tradition, excluding one distinctive part: thieves stole the handmade fire basket. The unknown perpetrators broke the wrought-iron from its concrete base. In fact, they ripped it completely from the ground and hauled it away. The Legion wishes this was an isolated occurrence, but unfortunately this is the second year in a row someone swiped the basket. Legion veterans concluded the only possible reason to steal this basket is to sell it for scrap. They definitely worked hard for a very tiny amount of iron. Mike Bender, the post’s adjutant and commander of Hamilton County’s 22 posts, described the precautions taken after the first basket … Keep Reading...

Girl Helps Raise Money for Stoughton Giant Flag

The city of Stoughton rented a giant flag for special days, such as September 11, which inspired a young girl to help raise money for a permanent city flag. Christine Iacobucci needed to cover an event in Stoughton last year for the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Since she was unable to find a babysitter, her daughter Isabella had to come with her to cover the event. Though she was only six years of age at the time, Isabella was so moved by the ceremony, she sang a patriotic song for the audience that she had learned at school. Upon discussing the flag ceremony with the Stoughton fire chief, Isabella found out that the giant 30 x 60 foot flag had to be rented for special occasions, such as the 10th anniversary memorial service of the September 11 attacks. Isabella was determined to get a permanent flag, so with the help of her mom, fundraising for the flag began not long after the ceremony. With the help of promoting the fundraising opportunity through Facebook and word of mouth, they raised $2,400 to put towards purchasing the new giant flag. The permanent Stoughton giant flag flew earlier this year … Keep Reading...
