Elks Chapter Celebrates the 236th Birthday of Old Glory

A local Order of the Elks chapter recently held a ceremony honoring the 236th birthday of Old Glory just in time for Flag Day. Last Sunday, over 120 community members attended a special pre-flag day ceremony at the Order of the Elks No. 2399 building. The ceremony honored the 236th birthday of the American flag. Although Flag Day is officially June 14th, the Elks chapter held the event on the first day of National Flag Week. To kick off the patriotic event, a group sang The Star-Spangled Banner as a Color Guard from the local Marine Corps League posted the colors. After that, a pair of Elks officers that included Ace Johnson told the crowd the story of Old Glory over the years. The historic story began with how the first American flag was commissioned in May or June of 1776, based on a rendering done by Betsy Ross. More historic story telling was done by a young Marine Jacob Glover. When he took the podium, he told the story “I am the Flag.” According this his speech, the first official US Flag came to be on June 14th, 1777. The Marine then proceeded to describe what the colors represented, … Keep Reading...

Veteran Receives Award for Dedication to the American Flag

After over 700 hours of volunteering, one veteran’s love for Old Glory lead him to receive an award for dedication to the flag. Wilkie Liang gets up early every weekend before sunrise. As he quietly walks across the empty parking lot, he holds a folded American flag in his hands. Liang takes his duties as a volunteer in police service very seriously, especially his job of ensuring the flag flies on all weekends and holidays when the police and fire headquarters are closed. Liang is a Vietnam veteran who served under the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He says, “There’s a purpose and a meaning behind rising and lowering the flag. It’s because of respect and honor for the veterans. It’s remembering them for their sacrifice.” Liang spent 33 years in the Air Force Reserves and another 42 years with the California state Department of Justice where he retired from in 2004. After that he decided to volunteer for the Sacramento Police Department where he helps with DUI checkpoints, community events, charity benefits, and more. For Liang, volunteering was a natural choice, especially due to his military background. But after all his activities with the police department, Liang cherishes his flag … Keep Reading...

Man Waves the U.S. flag on Corner for Decade

One man waves the U.S. flag for 10 years, spreading his thoughts on patriotism. Showing their support, cars honk as they drive past a small group of flag wavers on the corner of Colby and Hewitt avenues in Everett, Washington. Rain or shine, Kevin Moeller, 59, has hoisted up and waved Old Glory every Friday for the past 10 years. Moeller and his group first showed up when our nation headed to war with Iraq. Since 2003, Moeller has shown up on the same downtown corner at noon and proudly waves the U.S. flag for an hour. People like to share their opinion with him, but Moeller just keeps on waving Old Glory and says he has no plans to stop. One of Moeller’s goals is to make sure that no troops overseas or at home are ever forgotten. He comes from a military family and had a brother who served in Vietnam. Moeller said, “Whether we know it or not they are trying to protect our freedom.” Credit: Heraldnet.com

Teenager Raised High School Flag for Four Years

One patriotic teenager took it upon himself to complete his school’s flag raising duties and raise the High School flag for four years. While a massive rush of high school students hurried down the halls to class, one patriotic student took it upon himself to brave the bitter cold and biting wind to raise Old Glory. Atherton High School senior Thomas Swanson raised the American flag outside his school every day for four years. Often frozen from the cold, Swanson would use a bottle of hot water to unhinge the rope holding the American flag in place. Swanson’s younger brother David often helps him lift the stars and stripes towards the sky. Thomas is also set to pass on his special flag duties to his younger brother after he graduates at the end of this school year. Thomas said, “What the flag means to me is an awful lot for this country. I embrace the flag like a person. I really depend on the flag to be there always for me to show the freedom.” Thomas originally got the idea to raise the flag each day from his grandfather who often called the school to make sure Old Glory was … Keep Reading...

Georgia Sea Scouts Retire 500 U.S. Flags in Ceremony

The Sea Scouts retire more than 500 American flags in a fitting farewell for Old Glory. Earlier this month, eight young Sea Scouts retired over 500 U.S. flags at Memorial Park cemetery in Gainesville, Georgia. The retirement ceremony is a military tradition that takes worn out American flags and allows them to be disposed in a respectful manner. The assistant district commissioner for scouting Charlie DeSaussane said, “It’s been awhile since we’ve done a retirement, but they’ve done quite a few.” DeSaussane introduced the young men to the ceremony instructions but from there the scouts did all the heavy lifting. Each boy had his own important role and read part of the retirement script. During the ceremony, the Sea Scouts carefully cut one ceremonial flag into four pieces and then burned them. This crucial step often perplexes people who are not familiar with the U.S. flag retirement ceremony. A handful of veterans also attended in order to pay their respects to the over worked flags. DeSaussane, also a veteran, believes many people don’t properly dispose of American flags simply because they do not know how. “Even the smallest flag, if it’s in disrepair – ripped, torn, faded – it should … Keep Reading...

Optimist Club Puts Old Glory Front and Center

For almost 50 years, the Optimist Club has helped support a two-mile long American flag display and recently began the Friends of the Flag program. Like clockwork, every Sunday at 7 am and on federal holidays, a patriotic display of U.S. flags stretching for two miles is set up, later removed at midnight that same day. This has been a town tradition for nearly 50 years. The Optimist Club of Point Loma, which also helps support several local youth groups, has been an integral group in keeping the longstanding flag gesture alive. Optimist member and chairman of the nonprofit’s Friends of the Flag Program Barry Rogers said, “Every dime that we make goes entirely toward supporting youth activities… we’re pretty flexible about where we donate our money. If it’s somebody in need and it’s a worthy cause in our area, we usually support them.” Even though the flag ritual may seem simplistic, the funding certainly is not. Each year the project requires $5,000 for basic maintenance and upkeep of the American flags. The Optimists have fronted the cost for the past several years, but now are looking to the community for some financial support. The fun-loving and patriotic Point Loma … Keep Reading...

Nevada VA Clinic Honors Veterans and the Flag

Veterans Administration Health Clinic holds third annual flag-raising ceremony The Veteran’s Administration Health Clinic honored the stars and stripes by holding their third annual flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony. They also gave a special thank you to all veterans, both past, present and future, who vowed to honor and protect the United States’ most visible and enduring symbol, Old Glory. Prior to any speeches, Spc. Tim Hall raised both the U.S. and POW-MIA flags high in the air for all to see. Hall grew up in Hawthorne, Nevada and was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion of Bamber, Germany. Hall experienced a life-altering injury when his brigade was attacked, eventually leading to the amputation of both his legs. Hall spoke at the event saying, “You carried it, you saluted it, you guarded it, bled for it and wept under it. The American flag is special because it indicates the United States will come to the aid of people or countries and that those wearing the uniform will risk their lives.” Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. also expressed his sentiments and called the flag a special symbol to the whole nation. He also encouraged everyone to “thank a vet who has served … Keep Reading...

Deciphering Texas Flag Gossip

Is the Texas State flag really the only state flag allowed to fly at the same height as the American flag? Ever since Texas joined the Union on December 29, 1845, one rumor regarding the flag has been passed down from one generation to the next: The Texas flag is the only state flag allowed to fly at the same height as the American flag. This piece of Texas flag gossip is so engrained into the culture that the majority of the Texas public believes it. In order to get a final answer, one local TV news station employed the help from a history professor and flag enthusiast at the Texas College. According to Gary Paul, this rumor is only half true. All 50 state flags have the option to fly at the same height as the US flag, as long as they are on separate poles. If both flags fly on the same pole, the American flag must be on top. So how did such gossip spread in the first place? Paul explains that when Texas joined the Union, it kept its own flag. At that time it was the only state to have a unique and separate flag … Keep Reading...

Kansas Car Wash Gets a New Giant American Flag

American Legion group dedicates brand new flag to car wash. In Frontenac, Kansas, not even a cold chill in the air and slight drizzle could stop a special American flag dedication ceremony put on by the American Legion Post 43. The Post is also responsible for donating the new set of stars and stripes. Many community members turned out to honor the new giant America flag at Old Glory Car Wash, which now proudly flies right outside their front doors. Don Morey, post commander, welcomed and thanked the crowd for attending. The 60-by-30 foot flag, provided by the Post, waves from a 120-foot flagpole. However, this is not the first giant American flag to adorn the car wash. Owner Skip Hale is a big fan of the stars and stripes, but says these larger flags get fairly expensive to maintain. They run around $1,500 a flag and generally last a year before retirement calls. This forced Hale to take a break from his long running American flag tradition. The Legion decided to step in when one member, Floyd Simon, mentioned how much he missed seeing the big flag fly. Raymond Vail, Arma, American Legion Third District commander, made the official … Keep Reading...

First American Flag Raised at Trail of Heroes

Kansas City Police Department honor past heroes with new flag. The morning of November 21st marked the grand raising of the first ever American flag to grace the Trail of Heroes by the Kansas City Police Department. This monument aims to honor all officers and other department members who died in or out of the line of duty. Around two dozen Boy Scouts helped hoist Old Glory high in the sky for all to see. The project to bring the stars and stripes to the trail happened somewhat by chance. Master Patrol Officer Steve Busch and his son Greg were out looking for a way to improve their community when they stumbled upon the iconic Trail of Heroes. Both men knew something was missing but could not quite place exactly what. And then it hit them; there was no American flag. Busch said his son became very enthusiast about the project and, “I guess you could say he’s proud of his daddy. Then 25 years on the department and he’s kind of leaning toward wanting to be a police officer.” The memorial has always been an inspiring symbol for the KCPD and the community. Now the American flag solidifies that … Keep Reading...
