American Flag Procession Escorts ex-Navy SEAL to Burial

Chris Kyle’s American flag procession was led by 200 vehicles and many more citizens paying their respects to the hero. After a 200-mile journey back home, former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle was laid to rest in Austin, Texas as his family and fellow SEALs watched amid the sorrow sounds of drums and bagpipes. At the Texas State Cemetery, a giant Texas flag flew at half-staff to honor the hero. Considered the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history, Kyle and his friend were killed in early February while at a gun range. Kyle’s casket, with an American flag draped over it, was carried from his hometown of Midlothian to Austin. As the 200 vehicle procession crossed the state, many drivers pulled to the side of the road to watch while others showed their support by waving their own American flags. The procession included motorcycles, police cruisers, motor coaches, and more. Only 37-year-old, Kyle completed four tours in Iraq along with writing a best-selling book “American Sniper.” In Austin, hundreds of people gathered around the cemetery to pay their respects to the American hero. Many were veterans in leather jackets while others were businessmen in suits on their lunch break. Everybody … Keep Reading...

Louisiana Man Receives Flag Violation for Displaying his American Flag

Resident says the flag violation is punishment for being patriotic. Patrick Hogan, Covington, Louisiana resident follows the same tradition every national holiday: he proudly flies his American flag. This is a routine he has conducted ever since he left the Navy over four decades ago. However, this past Pearl Harbor Day he did not receive his usual warm sentiments for his patriotism. A few days after the holiday, he found a formal flag violation letter in the mail. The letter states that the American flag was not approved by the CAA and must be removed. Specifically, hanging the flag over the garage was against the associations rules. The Tallow Creek Neighborhood Association’s new management company sent the flag violation notice to Hogan with a warning that he must stop the action, or else. Hogan believes such a forceful request is un-American. “They can show all their Christmas decorations and leave their basketball goals at the curb, but I can’t fly my flag,” Hogan asked in disgust. The Louisiana man moved to this neighborhood after 2005 Hurricane Katrina forced him to move. This is the first incident between Hogan and the neighborhood association. No other fellow patriots in Hogan’s neighborhood have … Keep Reading...

Naval Officer Brings Home American Flag from Overseas

A flown American flag from overseas is dedicated to friends and family and given a permanent home at the postal office The Ridgewood Post Office (located in New Jersey) now houses a new symbol of pride and patriotism. That new fixture happens to be an American flag that flew over a Naval unit in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Naval officer and postal worker Ian May brought home the American flag after securing it on May 31st following an important mission. The flag is encased in a shadowbox and stands on display in the main lobby. Prior to the unveiling of the artifact, May said, “The whole time, I thought about the people here at the post office, my coworkers. I figured, let me fly the flag and honor them because they’ve been holding down the fort and taking care of business in Ridgewood while I was gone. That was my dedication to them.” Several post office employees also served time in the military. Dozens gathered for an early morning ceremony, including the Postmaster Gus Passaro. Over 12 years in the Navy, May served three tours in various places overseas. However, this most recent time abroad proved especially difficult for … Keep Reading...

American Flag Skydivers Kick Off Festival

Oceanside Harbor Days in California opens with a skydiving spectacle, including a giant American Flag. Oceanside Harbor Days is a truly unique festival, bringing together street fair attractions with the fun and sun of the harbor and beach. The city kicked off the festivities this past Saturday and Sunday with a skydiver jumping with a giant American flag. Over 40,000 people attended the festival over the two days, many of which watched with awe as the American flag skydivers floated graciously to the ground. Leaping from a moving plane thousands of feet in the air is not something high on many people’s agenda, let alone performing that jump alongside a 1,200 square-foot American flag. But nothing intimidates the Tsunami Skydivers in Oceanside and Skydiving Innovations of San Diego, who partnered together to perform the spectacle. They were simply showing their patriotism the best way they knew how. The festival also included a visit from the Coast Guard, who docked in the harbor and opened their ship for tours. The Navy also made a guest appearance with an action-packed landing on the beach Saturday morning. Credit: Camp Pendleton Patch

Flag Event at Church Evokes Life Lessons

Boy scout troop honors the flag and learns other life skills. In honor of Independence Day, Boy Scout troop 139 held a flag retirement ceremony while also dedicating a flagpole in honor of the holiday. This is the very first flagpole for Northampton Street Church where this troop is located. Learning how to properly retire the flag is only one of the many life lessons and skills Troop 139 learns. After a several year hiatus, Committee chairwoman Leona Harper reinstated the troop six years ago when she saw a need in the community for teaching young boys how to become men. Troop 139 now includes around 60 members between the Boy and Cub Scouts, which make it the largest inner-city troop in the United States. Kaleb Walker, a 13-year-old scout, says as a member he learned responsibility, leadership skills, and the value of treating others the way you want to be treated. He also explains, “helping out people- it gives me a good feeling inside.” Respecting the flag is a lesson Walker especially took to heart and looks to join to Navy or Air Force someday. In addition learning flag etiquette, the boys are taught how to swim, pitch a … Keep Reading...

Flown Flag Given as Gift for Care Packages

Madison receives a flag from the Navy as a thank you for care packages. The Borough Council in Madison, New Jersey helped the U.S. Navy in their own special way by sending care packages overseas. This is just one of the ways local communities are getting involved and helping boost the morale for armed forces overseas. Employees of the Borough dedicated their time to wrap up donated canned foods, toiletries, paper products, and more. The unit of Dominic DeRosa, a former Madison volunteer firefighter, graciously accepted the gifts, but not without giving one back. Petty officer DeRosa presented the Borough Council with a flag that was flown over Fujairah. Enclosed with the flag was a certificate reading: “Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron Eight (MSRON Eight) was recalled to active duty on 05 August 2011 in support of the Operation Enduring Freedom. Military Branch Flags: What do they look like?

There are five branches of the United States military; the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. While each branch of the military dedicates their time to certain aspects of protection and service, the five military branches work together to some extent in their role of security for the country. Each branch of the military has a separate flag, represented by emblems and insignia specific to the different branches. When displaying military branch flags together, the order of precedence should be the National Colors, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Flag of the United States – also often called the American Flag, has 13 alternating red and white stripes with a blue rectangle in the upper corner of the flag containing 50 small white stars, representing each of the 50 states. Flag of the United States Army – the United States Army flag shows a blue replica of the official seal of the Department of the Army on a white background, with a red scroll displaying ‘United States Army’ in white letters. Under the red scroll is the year 1775 listed in blue, which was the year the Army was created. Flag of the United … Keep Reading...
