Rare 1890 American Flag on Display

After finding a unique 1890 American flag, it will be on display for the public in honor of Memorial Day. A rare American flag was recently uncovered, that dates all the way back to the 1890’s. Even though it’s slightly faded and has a few tears, the enormous flag is still a sight to see. The flag measures 12 feet by 26 feet and has 44 stars. Historians can place the flag between July 1891, right after Wyoming entered the Union as the 44th state, and January 1896 when Utah became a state. Barbara Delmolino, a member of the Sheffield Friendly Union Library Association believes the flag is a very unusual find, due to its size and good condition considering its age. She also thinks the flag is made from a cotton and linen combination. The rare flag was actually found a year ago in an old desk drawer, when the Library Association was doing some renovations. For only the second time since its appearance, the flag will be on display in honor of Memorial Day. Viewing will be open to the whole public starting Monday May 27th at 9 am. Nobody is quite sure where the American flag exactly … Keep Reading...

Veteran Offers His Flag Etiquette Help

Just in time for the upcoming summer patriotic holidays, a US veteran offers his tips on American flag etiquette. Flying a flag with proper etiquette is important every day of the year, especially on patriotic holidays like Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Independence Day.  Roger Layton, first vice commander of the American Legion Post 22, holds the flag particularly close to his heart and wants to make sure everyone knows how to fly it right. Keeping all the rules straight can get a little complex, but they’re designed to make sure Old Glory is shown the honor and respect she deserves. For example, a light should always be shown on the flag when it’s displayed outdoors overnight. Flags must always be in good condition too. They are allowed to be repaired for minor fixes, but large tears and wholes require flag retirement (link to past blog). Layton said, “Flags should be in serviceable condition. There’s a point at which it gets ratty and people still display them when they should not. You can give unserviceable flags to any veterans’ organization like the American Legion or VFW, and they will properly destroy it.” If you would like to … Keep Reading...

Celebrating Memorial Day

Find out the meaning behind celebrating Memorial Day and plenty of fun and patriotic ways to spend the day. Why do we celebrate Memorial Day? This American holiday, always observed the last Monday in May, is meant to honor all the men and women who have given their lives while serving in the United States military. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day and came about a couple years following the Civil War. However, it was not until 1971 that Memorial Day became an official holiday. Flags are also to be displayed at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day. After that, the proper flag etiquette calls for them to be raised to full height. Half-staff flags are an extra way of honoring all our fallen heroes. If you have any more questions regarding displaying flags on Memorial Day, we have more information for you in a previous Memorial Day blog post. How do you plan on celebrating Memorial Day? Here are a few ideas. Some people honor fallen soldiers by visiting cemeteries where loved ones are buried. If you really want to show your respect, try placing a small American flag by the graves of veterans or special grave markers … Keep Reading...

921 American Flags Fly for Fallen Heroes

During the opening ceremony for the Field of Honor, 921 American flags flew in honor of fallen US heroes. Over 900 U.S. flags lined the entire parade route at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in order to honor military troops. The 921 flags to be exact were part of the opening ceremony for the sixth annual Field of Honor. David Kuhn honored his father he never knew during the Saturday ceremony. He placed his own US flag at the entrance of the Field. Kuhn was born the day his father was killed in World War II after his B-17 bomber was shot down over Germany. But his story was one of 10 that were told during the patriotic event. Paul Galloway, the executive director of the museum, said he gets such an awesome feeling when he looks out over 900+ flags blowing in the wind. But even though the ceremony is meant to celebrate and honor the sacrifices for the country, there was still a slight sadness among everyone remembering a lost loved one. The Field of Honor celebration comes just before Memorial Day, a holiday also dedicated to honoring all US military members. If you have a fallen … Keep Reading...

Veteran Seeks Help for his National Cemetery Flag Project

National Cemetery flag effort grows even larger and looks for more volunteer help. For many years, Bob Fussner and his wife Diane have made a trip out to the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on Memorial Day with bags of American flags. Headstones at the cemetery were not decorated with any flags for the holiday so the couple would select graves of veterans from each war and plant a tiny flag. But it never set well with Fussner that he couldn’t place an American flag at every grave. So last year Bob and Diane decided they needed to act and get enough flags for every single veteran buried. The project turned out a success as Fussner and a group of volunteers placed 26,000 tiny American flags at every gravesite of a veteran. However, this year Fussner estimates he’ll need around 35,000 flags so he is organizing his effort even early and asking for even more volunteers and support. He calls his non-profit National Cemetery project Flags for Fallen Vets and has since expanded to the national cemetery in Houston, Texas. Fussner also hopes to get more young people involved. He discovered last year that many people did not know about the … Keep Reading...

75 Year-Old Woman Faces Eviction for Flying American Flags – NJ

Dawn Paulus, 75, Threaten With Eviction for Refusing to Remove Three American Flags –Phillipsburg, N.J. Dawn Paulus, 75, flew three small American flags from her balcony in honor of Memorial Day.  Having lived through world wars and other difficult times she feels it’s important to express her patriotism and constitutional rights. With brothers, nephews, cousins and husbands having served or in services, supporting the veterans is a big deal to Mrs. Paulus.  But soon after she put the flags up, she received a cease order from the Philadelphia Housing Authority.  According to the Housing Authority she is in violation of her lease and will be evicted if she continues to leave the flags up on her balcony.  Paul Rummerfield, the executive director of the Phillipsburg Housing Authority said, “I don’t want to be that guy. I don’t want my legacy to be I kicked anyone out over a flag.” He also stated, “We’re not anti-American. It’s just a lease provision that says nothing can be on the balconies.” Rummerfield has been getting death threats from people that are so angry over the issue, but he claim the flags are a safety hazard. Paulus lives close to the town’s Civil War … Keep Reading...

Memorial Day, Honoring Our Nation’s Heroes

Memorial Day is a nationally observed holiday that occurs annually on the last Monday in May, honoring the men and women who died serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day officially became a federally recognized holiday in 1971. Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it is formerly known as, originated after the American Civil War; southern woman’s organizations and schoolchildren decorated Confederate soldier graves and thus started a commemorative gesture to honor fallen Union soldiers in the Civil War. After the World War I era, Memorial Day has been extended to include all fallen men and women who died in all wars serving the United States. There are a variety of traditions that Americans participate in on Memorial Day. Some rituals include flying flags at half-staff until noon and volunteers placing American flags at each gravestone in national and military cemeteries, while encouraging citizens to take a moment of silence at 3:00 PM local time as a symbol of remembrance. Many people celebrate by visiting cemeteries and memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 has been held the Sunday before Memorial Day. The Coca-Cola 600 stock car race and the Memorial Tournament … Keep Reading...

The observance is a series of events surrounding Memorial Day, which includes honoring the fallen, the second annual “Memorial Flowers” gift donation, a prelude concert by the United States Army Band, and a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by an observance ceremony in the cemetery’s amphitheater. The event is free and open to the public.
