U.S. Flag Flies Extra High in Flint

The Mott Building operations supervisor explains his flag duties, ensuring the U.S. flag flies extra high in Flint, Michigan. When the Federal government declares flags to fly at half-staff after a terrible tragedy, the highest flying flag in Flint, Michigan is no exception. And when it is raised to full staff once again, it soars over 200 feet above the Mott Foundation Building on Saginaw Street. Billy Powell, the building operations supervisor, makes sure the stars and stripes are always flying in their proper position. On Monday April 22nd, Powell returned to the 16th floor to raise the U.S. flag back to full-staff. Powell has now worked at the building for about 25 years and is well versed in proper flag etiquette. He says, “Whenever the flag is at half-staff, it should be lowered all the way down, then it should be brought back all the way to the top.” Powell can attribute his extensive flag knowledge to his time in the Marines and previous position as a Boy Scout Leader. He has also volunteered for the Girl Scouts. Powell holds the American flag in very high respect. The one on Mott Building measures 10 feet by 20 feet and … Keep Reading...

American Flag Honors a Local Marine

Over 45 years later, a special U.S. flag honors a local Marine. In Wappingers Falls when Dennis Whiteley was only ten years old, his brother Wayne was killed by a sniper in Vietnam. Now more than 45 years later, Marine Lance Cpl. Wayne Whiteley was honored for his dedication and sacrifice to his country with an American flag. In a special ceremony, Dennis and his parents received a commemorative American flag that had flown over the U.S. capitol. The flag is now set to fly outside the nursing home where Bill and Tess Whiteley reside. During the ceremony, veterans from World War II through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars joined to watch and honor the long lost local hero. Wayne, age 89, even helped raise the flag in memorial of his son. The dedication of the flag and ceremony were also meant to highlight the growing concern for the large number of veterans who now need special medical assistance. Programs that now run through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will be safe from upcoming Federal cuts, but still require attention. According to the VA, at the end of September 2012, there were over 480,000 veterans just in New York who … Keep Reading...

Marine Veteran Ordered to Take Down his American Flag

A US Marine veteran was recently told to remove an American flag and pole he set up outside his home after returning from Iraq. U.S. Marine Gregory Schaffer recently returned home to Florida after a grueling tour in Iraq. Upon his return, he set up a brand new American flag and pole outside his home to show off his patriotism. However, soon after he received a citation from the city of Hypoluxo, Florida that said the flagpole was in direct violation of a permitting code and that he must take it down right away. The 24-year old Marine veteran said it’s sad he can’t simply fly his own flag in his own yard. He also told the local news that it was his neighbor that filed the official complaint just days after the flagpole went up. A town official told reporters that the flagpole is considered a structure, which requires a permit. So if the Marine veteran would like to keep the flag and pole, he must get his own special permit. Schaffer would apply for a permit but that could cost him upwards of $1,000. However, city building officials are now saying they want to work with the marine … Keep Reading...

Marines Continue Tradition of Raising and Lowering American Flag

Military members consider the dawn and dusk flag ceremony an honor and tribute to all fallen comrades. Performed at U.S. military bases all over the world, the raising and lowering of the American flag is not simply another duty routinely carried out every day. Especially while deployed, this act holds enormous meaning. In fact, morning and evening colors are so highly regarded that any military members outside will immediately stop what they are doing, face the flag, and salute. They will also stop, pull over their cars and wait until the flag ceremony is done and the color guard announces it is alright to carry on with business. Lance Cpl. Henry Cervantes, an administrative clerk with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6 expressed his dedication to the ceremony and honor of taking part in it. He also calls it a “time-honored tradition,” that he doesn’t take lightly. He conducts the flag honoring tradition with Lance Cpl. Lamarr Johnson, another administrative specialist, as a two man team. As part of Johnson’s daily responsibilities, he marches out the flagpoles two times a day. He yells “colors” to signal to everyone the flag ceremony will begin. Quickly picking up on … Keep Reading...

Marine Surprises Son with Homecoming

Marine Surprises Son with Visit to Classroom During Flag Celebration On Monday June 11th in a Santa Cruz classroom, a group of kindergartens sang and danced about the American flag in anticipation of upcoming Flag Day. Among those students was five-year-old Michael Estrada, whose father Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Juan Estrada had been stationed overseas in Afghanistan for several months. As the class honored the flag, Estrada made a surprise entrance that stunned the little boy to the point he could not move until his father pulled him up into a tight embrace. Estrada had not seen his son since his deployment in mid-December, but said this was a moment he had thought about every day. Also waiting for him at home was his wife Elise and two younger daughters. As the surprise homecoming continued, the teacher Ms. Smith read the class a book titled, “My Dad is a Hero,” which equates American service men to super heroes. The students were also treated with pieces of red, white, and blue cake adorned with the word “God Bless America.” While Michael’s beaming face characterized the mood of the day, another student classified Monday as “the best day ever” not due to the cake … Keep Reading...

U.S. Marine Dedicates American Flag to His Soon-to-be-born Son At Home Marine Corps 1st Lt. Phillip M. Downey sent a unique gift home to his soon-to-be-born son from camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan.  On May 16, 2012 1st Lt. Downey sent his baby boy the U.S. Flag that flew 50 feet above the Task Force Leatherneck compound on April 28th.  Phillip Downey is currently serving a year-long deployment in the Helmand province and doesn’t think he’ll be able to make it home to see the birth of his son.  “One day, I want him to understand that there was a reason why I wasn’t there,” said the 25-year-old St. Louis native. A few weeks after he was deployed to Afghanistan in February, his girlfriend announced she was pregnant. Downey’s son is due in September, the seven-month mark of his scheduled one-year deployment.  Downey said the flag he is sending to his son will become a family heirloom that he hopes will be pasted down from generation to generation.  “A lot of Marines dedicate their flags to their parents or family members who were former Marines,” said Staff Sgt. Anthony B. Triplett, the administration chief for the commanding staff of Task Force Leatherneck and … Keep Reading...
