Wayland Fire Department Gets American Flag Flown in Combat from the Marine Corps

A family connection inspired Marine to dedicate an American flag flown in combat to his hometown fire department. Wayland, Massachusetts’ fire department now has a bit of new décor to add to their sleeping quarters thanks to the United States Marine Corps.  The firefighters received an encased American flag with a certificate of authenticity that reads: This is to certify this flag was flown in combat over Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom aboard F/A 18C ‘Hornet’ Aircraft Number 164891 (Helldiver 43) on August 4th, 2012, flown proudly by Sgt. E. O Rokes. Sgt. Edward O. Rokes presented the special flag to the Fire Department since he grew up around that area and has a deep heritage connected to the fire squad. Rokes’ father was a three-decade veteran firefighter and his brother is a joint communications dispatcher. Marine Surprises Son with Homecoming

Marine Surprises Son with Visit to Classroom During Flag Celebration On Monday June 11th in a Santa Cruz classroom, a group of kindergartens sang and danced about the American flag in anticipation of upcoming Flag Day. Among those students was five-year-old Michael Estrada, whose father Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Juan Estrada had been stationed overseas in Afghanistan for several months. As the class honored the flag, Estrada made a surprise entrance that stunned the little boy to the point he could not move until his father pulled him up into a tight embrace. Estrada had not seen his son since his deployment in mid-December, but said this was a moment he had thought about every day. Also waiting for him at home was his wife Elise and two younger daughters. As the surprise homecoming continued, the teacher Ms. Smith read the class a book titled, “My Dad is a Hero,” which equates American service men to super heroes. The students were also treated with pieces of red, white, and blue cake adorned with the word “God Bless America.” While Michael’s beaming face characterized the mood of the day, another student classified Monday as “the best day ever” not due to the cake … Keep Reading...

Military Branch Flags: What do they look like?

There are five branches of the United States military; the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. While each branch of the military dedicates their time to certain aspects of protection and service, the five military branches work together to some extent in their role of security for the country. Each branch of the military has a separate flag, represented by emblems and insignia specific to the different branches. When displaying military branch flags together, the order of precedence should be the National Colors, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Flag of the United States – also often called the American Flag, has 13 alternating red and white stripes with a blue rectangle in the upper corner of the flag containing 50 small white stars, representing each of the 50 states. Flag of the United States Army – the United States Army flag shows a blue replica of the official seal of the Department of the Army on a white background, with a red scroll displaying ‘United States Army’ in white letters. Under the red scroll is the year 1775 listed in blue, which was the year the Army was created. Flag of the United … Keep Reading...
