Mystery Patriot Plants American Flags

Late one night, a mystery patriot planted U.S. flags all around the neighborhoods of Sandwich, Illinois. In Sandwich, Illinois, Dan Kelleher woke up last Thursday like any other day. Except when he stepped outside to grab the paper, he noticed a small American flag planted right next to his mailbox. And when he took a drive around the whole block, he saw every house had a stick flag placed neatly next to their mailbox. Kelleher told the news crew Friday, “Then I drove around the whole block and I said, ‘Wow, they’re at all the houses.’ We want to thank whoever did this, because it was a thoughtful, beautiful gesture.” Unfortunately, the mystery patriot who planted the 57 flags in front of houses is yet to be identified. Residents of the community figure the secret flag-planter must have acted during the night since nobody saw anything. Another resident, Terry Adams, expressed her gratitude with, “It put a smile on my face. We do have a great neighborhood.” The flags appeared just 10 days after two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon. The Sandwich area is home to many firefighters and police officers, who were all deeply touched by the act … Keep Reading...

Ex-Marathon Runner’s Flag Carries Incredible Meaning

After 68 marathons, one runner’s flag carries incredible emotion and meaning. From Boston to Los Angeles, Tom Falvey has run in 68 marathons throughout his life. Now 76-years-old, his last 26.2 mile run that took him 5 hours and 40 minutes put massive stress on his body, causing him to throw in the towel. However, the small American flag he liked to hold at the start of many races will always remind him of love for the sport. The life-long sportsman, and ex-boxer, enjoyed waving this flag at the starting gate and at the end cheering on the final runners; a tiny act that speaks volumes. Falvey said, “I respect those runners who are out there for six, heck, sometimes close to seven hours and sort of stagger in all alone… Heck in my last couple years I was them.” Falvey spoke about the Boston Marathon tragedy and gave his deepest regards. The city of Toledo is doing their part to honor the victims with over 7,000 community members who volunteered to run. Falvey will be there waving his stars and stripes in a big and emotional way. Falvey enlisted in the Army during college, where he fell in love … Keep Reading...

County College Receives U.S. Flag Flown Overseas

Students at Gloucester County College received a U.S. flag flown overseas and returned the kindness by sending them a gift of their own. In Deptford, New Jersey, an American flag that once flew over a U.S military base in Afghanistan was given to the students at Gloucester County College Adult Transition Center. The flag was delivered to the students in return for their kindness a few weeks ago when they sent holiday cards to the troops. Last Friday, U.S. Sgt. Victor Halk visited the class to tell them about his military story. Halk was deployed twice so far, once to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. He told all the students are parents about typical job duties, medals, and how much care packages are appreciated. Halk also helped them properly fold the U.S. flag they received. To show their appreciation for Halk’s speech and the flag, the students then sent a paper quilt to the 508th Military Police Company, 1st Platoon, as a thank you. The students involved are all a part of the ACT program, which gives those with disabilities ages 18-24 a post-secondary skill set to help them transition into adult society. U.S. Honor Flag Flies for Texas District Attorney

The same U.S. honor flag honors multiple slain courthouse officials in Texas including District Attorney McLelland. On Monday April 8th, community members of Kaufman County gathered around the courthouse to watch as a special U.S. honor flag was raised in memory of District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia. The same honor flag was also flown for the assistant D.A. Mark Hasse a few months ago. Chris Heisler helps run the Honor Network and flag organization and according to him, McLelland was the first person to have touched the honor flag when he was alive. Heisler and McLelland met a few months ago after Hasse was killed. On Monday, Heisler told the crowd he knew McLelland was deeply touched by the meaning behind the flag. Normally, flags would be lowered to half-staff after this kind of tragedy, but Heisler wanted a different way to honor the McLellands. The U.S. honor flag was originally given to Heisler just after the September 11th attacks and he took it to fly at ground zero. Since then, the special honor flag has flown in memory of thousands of fallen soldiers, firefighters, officers, and other heroes. The small community still does not know much … Keep Reading...

Atmore City Unveils First Municipal Flag

The City of Atmore finally has a new emblem of community pride – their first municipal flag. Atmore City can attribute their new municipal flag to one key group, the Leadership Atmore class of 2013. The group worked tirelessly in order to bring a new symbol of community pride to the town’s residents. The flag design was officially unveiled on Monday, March 11th and immediately adopted by the city council during their regular meeting. The vote was unanimous. All elements of the flag, including the locomotive inside a circular pattern, words “Atmore, Alabama” and “Founded in 1907,” were meant to commemorate the rich traditions of the city and honor their past. During the early 1900’s, Atmore got its start as Williams train station. The city already has plans to officially dedicate the municipal flag during this year’s Mayfest later in May. American Flag Controversy Brewing at an Arizona Apartment Complex

After enforcing old rules, a Phoenix apartment complex started a heated American flag controversy. After new management took over an apartment complex in Phoenix, Arizona, a debate began over whether or not tenants are allowed to display their American flags outside their units. The new building owners began enforcing old rules that used to go ignored. The apartment complex has always had rule that banned outdoor decorations, which includes American flags. However, previous management did not enforce the restriction. Current residents and military veteran Brock Clark have a big problem with the building management beginning to crack down on the U.S. flag ban. Clark said, “It’s important for me to fly a flag because I have friends serving in the military now and I served and it is what American stand for.” Clark served his country under both the Army and the Marines for 20 years. He used to carry an American flag with him during his years of service and now hangs that very flag from his balcony, up until late February when the new rules took effect. Clark and other residents at the apartment complex wonder who is offended by the American flag, especially since the complex has … Keep Reading...
