Display Your Earth Day Flag on April 22nd
In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22nd as International Mother Earth Day. The 22nd of April, aka Earth Day, is a celebration that is intended to encourage awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. John McConnell allegedly pioneered the concept of Earth day in 1969 at a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) conference in San Francisco. The first annotations of Earth Day were in San Francisco and other cities on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring. The first public recognition of Earth Day was by San Francisco, the city of Saint Francis, patron saint of ecology. Earth Day is now celebrated in more than 175 countries every year and is coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. An entire week of activities focused on environmental issues, called Earth Week, is now celebrated by numerous communities. According to Flags of the World, the Ecology Flag was created and published on November 7, 1969. A cartoonist for the Los Angeles Free Press, Rob Cobb, produced the flag.
