Happy Birthday Arkansas! Some Fun Facts and Information about Arkansas state flag and history. Arkansas is 176 years young today. On this day in history, June 15, Arkansas was admitted as the 25th state into the Union in 1836. Though Arkansas was admitted to the Union in 1836, the state’s current flag (see below) was not adopted until 1924. Prior to the commissioning of the USS Arkansas, it was noted there was not an official state flag. A flag design contest was helped by the Daughters of the American Revoluation (DAR) to determine what the state’s flag would look like. Willie Kavanaugh Hocker’s design was chosen and later adopted in 1924. The Arkansas flag starts with a red background dominated by a white diamond with a blue boarder in the center. The outer blue boarder contains 25 stars representing that Arkansas was the 25th state to join the union in 1836. In the middle of the diamond four more stars, one above and three below surround the name “Arkansas.” The single star above the name represents that Arkansas was a part of the Confederate States while the three below have varying meanings.
